Costume Construction
Costume Construction is an opportunity for those students with increasing skill level in costume techniques to refine their skills and learn advanced level techniques. Projects vary from flat pattern drafting, draping, interpreting a rendering into fabric, millinery techniques and even corset construction. This gallery represents examples of demonstrated techniques and the work students accomplished through experiential training.
The latest examples were my class which was shutdown in March 2020 because of Covid. I began the course walking the class through the patterning from calculating and enlarging a historical 1803 gown. For this project, they took the pattern to muslin mock up, fit the gown with a class partner and then completed the detailing of the gown as if the mock up were fashion fabric.
We had just begun draping and mock-ups for jerkins when everything was shut down. The following week we picked back up online. I adapted the course by emailing and Blackboarding assignments for mini-projects practicing the basics of pattern alteration by slash and spread method.
Because not all of my students had an available sewing machine at home, the final project with materials were shipped to the students with pictorial instruction and online labs practicing hand stitching refinement and millinery skills to build a fabric covered wired frame hat.
Below are examples of the amazing work these students accomplished mostly in the confines of their own homes.

The examples below represent an earlier class and their construction assignments which included corset mock ups and builds and learning to drape on dress forms, Students were allowed to explore and practice their learned patterning and draping skills in the final project which was a personalized piece for which they assisted one another in proper fitting of garments.
Costume Technology Basics: This final set of pictures if from the beginning Costume Technology course. Under normal circumstances, I usually teach basic hand stitches, sewing machine skills and smaller projects. However, I had a semester with a smaller class size and a large amount of motivation. Thus, we were able to accomplish a lot of the basics quickly. I encountered so much enthusiasm that we were able to practice larger basic patterning projects which were mocked up and taken to fashion fabric for their final. The dolls are an extra bit of fun two of my students had in making mini-me's!
